Description
Isaac Brazeau is holding a bear cub in his arms.

In the past, people would sometimes domesticate bear cubs to keep them as pets. Alex Mapachee recounts: ‘We used to say we could eat it later. But when the time came, we couldn’t bring ourselves to kill it; it had become part of the group. We would take it far away, to the edge of the lake, so it wouldn’t come back.’ Some people rather tamed beavers, otters... and even raccoons. Assigning them a human name was not recommended.
